Its 5 km of beach with a wide sandy strip and shallow water close to the shore. THE SPOT The municipality of Castelldefels is proud to be the first beach in the city of Barcelona to allow the practice of windsurfing all year round. Enjoys a typical Mediterranean climate and an average annual temperature of 20 ° C about 300 days of sunshine a year. THERMAL WIND The best wind direction is South Est (called Garbí). It is stronger in spring and early summer because the land gets hot, while the water is still cold. From March to May the wind in the afternoon is around 12 to 18 knots, side on-shore. WATER CONDITIONS At Windsurfspot Castelldefels the water is choppy or with little waves and warm in summer. It used to be shallow next to the shore, but the depth changes after each storm. LEVEL OF RIDING all levels are allowed and recommended. The beach is wide enough for beginners. The thermal wind direction is side on-shore. Beginners can come back walking if they haven’t mastered going upwind yet. The afternoon sea breezes of high summer months offer virtually guaranteed 15 knot onshore kiting in the bay, meaning it’s very popular, so think about booking in late spring / early summer or late summer / early autumn when there’s still a good chance of sea breezes and the southern winds (side-on, from the right) are still kicking in with the occasional 25 knot all-dayer. The best spots are at the northern part of the bay near Sant Pere town and where you’ll find a safe place to park and set up your gear, kite shops, cafés and the most constant winds. No tides and no currents, conditions are lakeside safe with bump ‘n’ jump chop a bit further off the shore. You may need a hoody / jacket at night in the spring and autumn. The water temperatures are around 20°C / 68°F for most of the summer. ACCOMMODATION Luxury hotels, family hotels, rental apartments and houses plus there are excellent rural options - from downright classy to extremely modest. Most kiters opt for local campsites like the very well equipped offering comfort, peace and quiet, a 100 yard (max) walk to the beach and a wide range of modern facilities such as swimming pools, buffet dining, watersports options, bike hire and more. NO WIND Walk or bike 15 minutes into the hinterland or drive 20 minutes north or south for country scenes reminscent of Tuscany or Sardinia. The Pyrenees are just 50 kilometres away and the rugged bays and hills of Cap de Creus are much closer and more like Scotland’s west coast than most people’s idea of Spain. Other alternatives: vineyard wine tasting, watersports, a waterpark, horse riding or visit the new wind tunnel at nearby Empuriabrava, the biggest skydiving centre in Europe. There’s a Dali museum in Figueres 20 minutes away, the sophisticated walled city of Girona is 45 minutes and there are local markets, too. For music there are highbrow open air festivals in the summer as well as beach parties and a handful of nightclubs in the town for all tastes and styles. GET AROUND Hire a car if you want to see the artistic and cultural sights, however you're staying on a campsite you'll find almost everything you need a short walk away at most, from SUP, kite, surf shops, beach bars, natural parks, supermarkets, cafes and restaurants. All campsites hire bikes. Buses are very infrequent but there are plenty of taxis. In summer you might trip over the odd drunk teenager sleeping it off on the beach, but that's about as gnarly as it gets. Easily the biggest expanse of truly kite-able flat water in Europe – Lo Stagnone is an eight square mile lagoon in the north of Sicily that can be ridden in either of the two northerly and southerly prevailing wind directions. No tides, no dangers. A number of pro freestyle riders have made films there and if you tuck in behind the island in the middle of the lagoon or close to the ‘salina’ salt plain walls then you can slice your way through perhaps the glassiest water you’ll ever ride! Lo Stagnone isn’t tidal, although the height of the water does fluctuate slightly depending on wind direction. One of the main appeals for all levels of rider is that it’s standing depth all the way across with a soft, silty bottom and there are reeds close to the shore that make the water seem even flatter. This is a truly awesome spot for flat water freestyle but is also ideal for beginners due to the lack of shore break or currents. Most lessons happen closer to the kite centres at the main beach, so if you’re an independent kiter then be considerate and leave them a little space. There’s plenty to go around! The water temperature varies in summer from around 20°C / 68°F to 26°C / 79°F from May to September with air temperatures from 20°C / 68°F to 28°C / 82 °F. May through to October are the most reliable months, but Lo Stagnone gets roughly 300 days of wind a year and it’s gloriously sunny in summer. You’ll need a spring suit in late / early season and winter but you can wear boardies or a bikini most of the time from May to October. Located on the western tip of Sicily, we kitesurf the shallow waters of the bay of Lo Stagnone an ideal spot for beginners, experienced riders and pro riders, after a good day of riding, enjoy a spectacular sunset. Our base is centrally located in Lo Stagnone spot, but also this part of the shore faces the water of optimal depth and is best situated in relation to the most often wind directions. NO WIND If you run into a windless period then you can go for a chilled SUP or kayak around the lagoon, go hiking or mountain biking in the Sicilian mountains on world class trails. Also don’t miss a visit to Favignana Island. There are also surf spots within a reasonable distance that pick up mediterranean swell in the colder months. This being Sicily, you can visit the town where The Godfather movies were filmed or take a trip to Mozia Island. Lo Stagnone is also surrounded by the remnants of the salinas, which are incredible to see. The discipline is not new: there long ago in the 60’s, « Waikiki Beachboys of Honolulu » surf teachers stood on their boards with a paddle to stabilize. Stand Up Paddle » SUP » Boarding is derived from its Polynesian roots. The Hawaiian translation is Ku Hoe He’e Nalu; to stand, to paddle, to surf, a wave. Vieux Boucau’s ever shifting sandbanks kick up consistent surf and good waves all year round. Just 30 minutes from Biarritz airport, Vieux Boucau is a reliable surf spot with peaks popping off up and down the beach. When surfers talk about Vieux Boucau, they talk about north of the river and south of the river. They’re referring to the runoff from the Port d’Albret lagoon and there’s good waves both to the north and the south. The sand banks are constantly moving around though, so it’s up to you to find the best peak on the day. Fortunately, it’s easy to check the surf from up on the dune at the far end of Avenue des Dunes. The Best Time of year to go surfing vieux boucau For most surfers, the best time to surf Vieux Boucau is during the months either side of July and August. The water’s warm, it’s not too crowded and the swell is pretty consistent. In September and October, the evenings are still long, you can surf in boardshorts and the kids are back in school, so you can get plenty of waves to yourself.
