EL BALNEARIO : The Balneario beach is located about 200 meters from the port of Tarifa, right next to the Isla de las Paloma, which separates the Atlantic Ocean from the Mediterranean Sea. It is the most consistent surf spot in Tarifa, perfect for advanced and intermediate level surfers. Right and left of good size and power. LOS LANCES Los Lances beach is a sandy bottom spot with good rights that starts with all tides, as long as the sea is not small. It is an ideal beach to learn to practice surfing that works best with an easterly wind. HURRICANE Spot on a rock bottom located just in front of the Hurricane Hotel, hence its name. Its right-hand waves are fun, suitable for those who are just starting out. PLAYA DE BOLONIA, TARIFA It is located just 15 kilometers from Tarifa, and it is easily reached through a well-signposted deviation that starts from the national road that goes to Cádiz. Bolonia beach is one of the most beautiful in Spain. But if Levante blows and the right swell enters, you may even forget the turquoise color of its waters and the impressive Roman ruins of Baelo Claudia.

When it gets big, it is a wave without a take-off zone, that begins with an elevator drop and end with warping barrel that heaves and throws the thickest lip you’ll ever witness. And if you make it through that, the compression from the tube caving in on itself will shoot you out like a cannon, so hold on, because the acceleration from the spit is incredible. When you make it out, you can’t help but raise your arm and claim. It’s quite an experience! Teahupoo is not the only reef pass that has good waves in Tahiti. Befriend the locals and they might just invite you to one of their local secret spots. The remainder of French Polynesia is full of undiscovered surf spots, you could spend years sailing around these atolls in search of waves. Vieux Boucau’s ever shifting sandbanks kick up consistent surf and good waves all year round. Just 30 minutes from Biarritz airport, Vieux Boucau is a reliable surf spot with peaks popping off up and down the beach. When surfers talk about Vieux Boucau, they talk about north of the river and south of the river. They’re referring to the runoff from the Port d’Albret lagoon and there’s good waves both to the north and the south. The sand banks are constantly moving around though, so it’s up to you to find the best peak on the day. Fortunately, it’s easy to check the surf from up on the dune at the far end of Avenue des Dunes. The Best Time of year to go surfing vieux boucau For most surfers, the best time to surf Vieux Boucau is during the months either side of July and August. The water’s warm, it’s not too crowded and the swell is pretty consistent. In September and October, the evenings are still long, you can surf in boardshorts and the kids are back in school, so you can get plenty of waves to yourself. Having said that, the peak summer months are great for newbies wanting to take their first surf lessons. The water’s warm and the waves are friendly most of the time. You just need to watch out for the number of people in the water. If you’re a beginner, it’s a good idea to take a lesson with one of the many Vieux Boucau surf schools. Your instructor will fast track your progression and keep you safe in the crowded waves. Experienced surfers will love the winter months. The swell builds in size and power through October, November and December, there’s fewer surfers in the water and it’s not unusual for Vieux Boucau to produce some quality overhead barrels. You just need to grab your 4/3 wetsuit and booties and enjoy an epic winter session.
